Scent & Confidence FAQs
What is pay-as-you-train?
Pay-as-you-train allows full flexibility for when you attend your classes. this is a totally unique way, and are designed for my clients to be able to fit puppy training around their lifestyle, but still be able to commit to their four-legged friend and their learning journey. It is important that young dogs have fun, and learn at the same time.
What is scent training for dogs?
Scent training taps into your dog’s most powerful natural ability — their sense of smell. Dogs naturally explore the world through scent, and these sessions teach them how to search for a specific scent in a structured and rewarding way. It’s a fun, mentally stimulating activity that builds focus, confidence and problem-solving skills.
What are the benefits of scent training?
Scent work is one of the most enriching activities you can do with your dog. It helps to:
- Provide powerful mental stimulation
- Build confidence in nervous or worried dogs
- Reduce stress and frustration
- Strengthen your bond with your dog
- Give high-energy dogs a positive outlet
Many owners are amazed at how calm and satisfied their dogs are after a scent session.
Is scent training suitable for reactive or nervous dogs?
Yes — scent work is fantastic for reactive, anxious or easily overwhelmed dogs. Because the sessions are held individually, your dog can work at their own pace without the pressure of other dogs nearby. The focus on sniffing also naturally helps dogs relax and regulate their emotions.
What scents will my dog learn?
In training we begin with specific target scents, typically Clove, Birch, and Anise. These scents are commonly used in scent training as they are easy for dogs to recognise and work with. Once you and your dog understand the training techniques, the same methods can be applied to many other scents, allowing you to continue practising and developing your dog’s skills at home.
Do dogs need any previous training to start scent work?
Not at all! Scent training is perfect for beginners. No previous experience is needed and dogs of all ages and breeds can take part. We start with the foundations and gradually build your dog’s skills as their confidence grows.
What kind of dogs benefit most from scent training?
The short answer is almost all dogs! But it can be especially helpful for:
- Reactive dogs
- Nervous or under-confident dogs
- High-energy dogs that need mental stimulation
- Dogs recovering from injury who need low-impact activities
- Owners looking for a fun activity to enjoy with their dog
It’s an inclusive activity where every dog can succeed.
How are the scent training sessions structured?
All PawFecter Scent Training sessions are held individually, allowing your dog to learn in a calm, pressure-free environment. Each session builds on the previous one, helping your dog develop their searching skills while growing in confidence and focus. You’ll also learn how to continue simple scent games at home between sessions.
How many sessions will my dog need?
Every dog is different, but most dogs benefit from a short programme of sessions so we can gradually build their skills and confidence. Many owners choose to book a package of sessions so they can see real progress and enjoy watching their dog develop their natural scenting ability.
How do I book a scent training session?
You can book your PawFecter Scent Training session online at a time that suits you. If you’re unsure whether scent training is right for your dog, feel free to get in touch and I’ll be happy to help you decide if it’s a good fit.
Client Feedback
Claire is an amazing individual. Structured processes in building my dogs confidence and she has a wealth of knowledge on how to increase the important bond we need with our dogs.
Amazing facilities. We are really inspired to continue training our dog. Pleasure to have met Claire. Thank you!

Myself and my partner had recently rescued a dog who was starting to show reactivity to other dogs that was escalating into making him nearly unmanageable on his walks.
Claire turned the entire situation around for us. She was empathetic, kind and understanding, but no nonsense – got us right on track, gave us a fully customised written training plan for our dog, and then when the current setup wasn’t working she adjusted it and we now have an entirely different dog who is doing so well out on his walks.
I genuinely recommend Claire to anyone struggling with their dog, as I cannot think of any trainer I would trust more.
